Description
The grass carp, often also called the white Amur, is a freshwater fish and can be a maximum of 120-150 cm long and 45 kg.
In spite of its now firmly established German name, the grass carp is not closely related to the carp (Cyprinus carpio).
Grass carp are often abandoned in silted-up ponds or lakes to reduce underwater vegetation.
Way of Life/habitat
The grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) comes from Asia: there it occurs from China to Eastern Siberia (Amur system). In the meantime, this type has been spread by humans in Europe and America.
Its habitat is calm, deep, warm rivers. It can also be found in warmer lakes and ponds. Energy-saving stands (old arms, groyne fields) are preferred in rivers. The grass carp likes warm water and can live for over 20 years in it.
